The great feline of the Americas
The Jaguar
Named as a jaguar, Onça-Pintada, Onça-Preta or jaguaretê, the jaguar is the largest feline in the Americas and the third largest in the world, second only to the lion and tiger. As jaguars usually live in closed and dense forests and are scattered throughout america (north, south and central), however, in most of these places it was extinct, as in the United States and parts of South America, today its largest population is in Brazil. Among all regions, the Brazilian "Pantanal" is the place with the highest density of this animal in the world, with about 20.000 jaguars.
The total length is up to 2.70 meters and weighs between 35 kg to 160 kg. Its coat varies from light yellow to brown and is characterized by black spots in the form of rosettes of different sizes, function as markings to differentiate individuals, as they are unique in each of them. In many regions, jaguars are called tigers, probably due to a cultural heritage of early immigrants and settlers.
